EXCURSIONS AND LEISURE POSSIBILITIES
Innsbruck is considered as an optimal starting point for excursions in the Tyrolean Upland and Lowland as well as in the surrounding neighbouring countries Italy, Germany and Switzerland.
Nordkette – from the city directly into the Tyrolean mountains
The new Hunberburgbahn and Nordkettenbahn (mountain cable railways) started their operation in the beginning of 2008. The ascent to 2,000 metres above sea level in about 20 minutes starts directly in the Innsbruck city centre. Numerous offers such as “Ride and Dine”, an evening Indulge Package or the breathtaking Flying Fox will delight visitors. Various tickets offer the visitors a ride with the cable railways and some also include the entrance fee to the „Alpine Zoo“ or “Swarovski Crystal Worlds”. As our guest you get a discount of 5% for ski tickets, a single and round trip.
Swarovski Crystal Worlds
The home of the meanwhile world-famous Swarovski Crystal Worlds is located in Wattens, only a few minutes by car from Innsbruck. The attraction created by André Heller outwardly resembles a water-spewing giant. An impressive presentation concerning the possibilities and the many-faceted realm of glass crystals awaits visitors in the inside.
Hiking areas
Extensive hiking trails in the Nordkette (“North Chain”) mountain range in the Karwendel mountain range but also in the eastern and western highlands invite visitors to explore the region with rucksack and hiking stick. The Zirbenweg trail at an elevation of 2,000 metres above sea level extends from Mount Patscherkofel to Mount Glungezer and offers a splendid panorama of the Inn Valley and the surrounding mountain world. The Achensee (lake), Wipptal (valley) or the Kühtai regions can also be hiked on well-developed trails within a radius of one hour by car.
Lanser See with Igler Bahn
The Igler Bahn (“Igls Railway”) starts in the operational area of the Innsbruck Municipal Transportation Network or at the Stubai Valley railway station and leads past Bergisel through forests up to the mountain plateau of Igls and Lans. There nothing more stands in the way of a small hike or a visit to Lanser See (lake). It is also possible to interrupt the journey for a visit to Ambras Castle and to continue the trip afterwards.
From Mount Patscherkofel to Mount Glungezer – on the Zirbenweg trail along the Inn Valley
Proceed with the Patscherkofelbahn (cable car) to a lofty elevation of 1,952 m. From there a hiking trail hemmed by Swiss stone pines leads along the Inn Valley to Mount Glungezer. The 2 ½ hour hike offers beautiful nature and a beautiful view of Innsbruck and the surrounding mountains.
Mutterer Alm
The Mutterer Alm, the adventure mountain in the southwest of Innsbruck, is a popular hiking and skiing area. At the elevation of the Mutterer Alm top station there is an adventure world for young and old. The topics of wood, water, sand and stone will be presented in a special way. Discover watercourses, waterwheels and tree houses, and take a stroll on the “Barefoot Hiking Trail”. An adventure playground, reservoir and number resting places invite you to linger and enjoy the setting while the little ones prospect for gold.
The Mutterer Alm is reachable by bus as well as with the Stubai Valley Railway.
Alpine pasture huts
Numerous alpine pasture huts open to the public – such as the Arzler, Höttinger, Patscher or Rinner Alm huts – invite hikers to enjoy a hearty “board snack” and a cool drink. Most alpine pasture huts are open during the main season in the winter and in the summer. In the in-between season it is worthwhile to obtain more detailed information.
Guest bobsled at the Olympic Ice Canal Innsbruck Igls
Five guests with a professional pilot race along the ice canal in the guest bobsled. From the ladies start it is an exciting 900 metre downhill with 10 curves, a roundabout and a height differential of 100 metres into the valley.
Hall and Hall Mint
Not far from Innsbruck is the medieval characterised town of Hall. The Hall Old Town is amongst the best-kept old towns in Austria. The tasteful buildings attest to the past as a prosperous town. You should also visit Hasegg Fortress with the Hall Mint, which was established in Hall as a sovereign minting facility from the middle of the 15th century.
Rattenberg
Visit the smallest town in Austria with a municipal area of only 11 hectares. The medieval townscape has been retained in its entirety and offers a special flair. Visit the castle ruins above Rattenberg and experience the art of glassblowing in one of the show shops in the town’s historic alleys.
With the steam-driven cog railway to Achensee
Travel with the train directly from the Innsbruck main railway station to Jenbach, and transfer there to the steam-driven cog railway. Look forward to a trip with the nostalgic train on the 6.73 km long stretch from Jenbach to Seespitz am Achensee, and while doing so enjoy the countryside passing by. The view extends from the Inn Valley via the Stubai Alps in the west into the Zill Valley Alps in the south and the Wilder Kaiser area in the east.

Arriving at Achensee, not only numerous cafes invite you to stay a while, the leisure fun is also provided. Plunge into the cool water or start a mountain bike or hiking tour. Explore the lake with one of the excursion ships which ply the waters of Achensee and enjoy the mountain panorama from the water.
Stubai Valley Railway
Travel with the train directly from the Innsbruck main railway station into the Stubai Valley. Discover the Innsbruck environs, the beginnings of the Wipp Valley and the Stubai Valley on the cosy journey. The train’s end station lies in Fulpmes. From there you can ride with the gondola cable car up to the Schlick 2000 hiking and ski area, or take advantage of the leisurely hiking trails in the valley.
Aqua Dome
Tyrol’s singular thermal spring in Längenfeld is located amidst the mountain world of the Ötz Valley. Längenfeld can refer to a long tradition as a spa town, and was already well-known in the 16th century. Today the thermal water is utilised in a modern thermal & adventure bath facility.
Munich
The Bavarian capital is reachable in only two hours from Grand Hotel Europa. Munich offers an extensive offer of events as well as numerous attractions such as the zoo, the Pinakothek museums, the Deutsche Museum and the famous Oktoberfest.
Lake Garda
About two and a half hours by car south of Innsbruck visitors can experience the Mediterranean climate of Lake Garda. The first harbingers of the Mediterranean region – such as olives, oleander, cedars and palms – grow on the sunlit slopes surrounding Lake Garda, which is hemmed by mountains.
Lake Constance
Central Europe’s third largest lake in terms of surface area, Lake Constance, is located two and a half hours by car west of Innsbruck. It offers an extensive range of water sports. The provincial capital of Vorarlberg, Bregenz (with the well-known Bregenz Festival), as well as the flower island Mainau are located on its shores.
Chiemsee
The Chiemsee, also called the Bavarian Sea, offers an extensive range of water sports possibilities. The countryside surrounding the Chiemsee – the Chiemgau – is one of Bavaria’s most popular recreation areas.
Neuschwanstein Castle
Neuschwanstein Castle is regarded as the most well-known castle in the Allgäu region and was built by King Ludwig II. The fairytale castle was very strongly inspired by Moorish architecture and Richard Wagner’s legendary world. After his legal incapacitation, it served Ludwig II as his residence.
